SUMMARY:Finding La Yarda | Interactive Installation
DESCRIPTION:Finding La Yarda is an immersive multimedia art experience recreating a room from La Yarda\, the housing unit built for Mexican American railroad workers in Lawrence\, Kansas from 1920-51. Using film\, sound\, art\, and digital storytelling practices\, Finding La Yarda brings oral history to life by taking audiences on a cultural journey through time and place. Contributing Artists include Justin Favela\, Ann Dean\, Jonathan Christensen Caballero\, Brenna Buchanan Young\, Jeremy Rockwell\, Peter Jasso\, and Marlo Angell. \nA creative team of artists has worked in close collaboration with former La Yarda residents and their descendants to manifest this project. The installation uses experiential tools to create an artistically rendered living space from the La Yarda apartments. From brick facades to a recreated garden and interior kitchen\, tactile set pieces add a physical dimension to the housing unit that until now has only been visible through photographs and paintings. \nDesign Architect Brenna Buchanan Young created floor plans and blueprints for this work. Artist Jeremy Rockwell built the structure on a life-size scale. \nFormer Ceramics Artist-in-Residence Jonathan Christensen Caballero’s ceramic sculptures were molded from the families’ hands\, faces\, and feet. They provide isolated moments for participants to reflect on.   \nMixed media artist Justin Favela has created a wall-length mural and tree using piñata inspired materials. The mural takes inspiration from the impressionistic childhood memories of the residents and the tree will be created through a hands-on collaborative process with the community. \nTo take the impact of this project outside of the Arts Center walls\, photographic portraits of the living residents of La Yarda taken by photographer Ann Dean will be displayed on the Lawrence Loop at 8th and Delaware. These large-scale images will highlight the contributions of the Mexican American community in Lawrence and reach people outside of traditional gallery spaces. \nTelevision screens mounted in window sills and table tops reveal fleeting moments and memories through the medium of experimental film created by Marlo Angell and Peter Jasso. \nThrough these elements\, attendees will experience the domestic atmosphere\, emotional connections\, cultural celebrations\, and environmental struggles that took place both within and outside the walls of La Yarda. \nINSIGHT Art Talk  | September 16\, 7 pm  \nThis project is produced by the Lawrence Arts Center by a sub-award from Stories for All: A Digital Storytelling Project for the Twenty-First Century\, an initiative hosted by the Hall Center for the Humanities in partnership with the Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities at the University of Kansas and supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Justin Favela’s participation is made possible by visiting artist grant support from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission.

SUMMARY:Public Open House #2 — 7th Street to Constant Park Plans
DESCRIPTION:Please plan come to provide your feedback about plans for The Lawrence Loop Segment from 7th Street to Constant Park.\nThe Lawrence Loop is key to the City of Lawrence’s unmistakable identity. Sections currently complete already provide residents and visitors a way to explore and experience Lawrence through walking\, running\, biking\, and rolling. The section of the Loop from 7th Street to Constant Park is one of the remaining incomplete sections\, located adjacent to\, yet disconnected from\, downtown Lawrence\, and is an area rich with history. It is also one of the more complicated sections\, with potential railroad crossings\, private property\, and busy road crossings. When fully complete\, the Loop will provide a continuous urban greenway of over 22 miles around the City.\nThe City of Lawrence is exploring funding opportunities to support the final design and construction of the Loop’s missing portion. Throughout the fall of 2023 and into early 2024\, the City will conduct a community engagement process\, building off successful prior community engagement\, to support a successful RAISE grant application.\nProject website: https://lawrenceks.org/…/lawrence-loop-7th-street-to…/\n

SUMMARY:Belgium Waffle Ride 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Belgian Waffle events begin on Friday\, October 13th. \nThe BWR KS is the greatest gravel / unroad course in America. The route will take riders on a ronde of the rolling hills north of Lawrence\, where it will clatter through agrarian hamlets and the Ardennes-like hills — not over classic mountains per se\, but rather a never-ending string of ups and downs — along sinuous unroads\, single-track through the woods or along the lakefront\, muddy trails and two spectacular cyclocross courses carved through the grass\, woods and valleys of Snake Farm – De Kleine Slang and The Slengenwinkel Doolhof – situated at a magical place of forested backcountry that’s just a few miles from downtown Lawrence. The 2023 course is new\, as but features plenty of the rolling hills from the 2021/22 edition\, where there are virtually no straightaways\, and lots of opportunities for pain and suffering. Oh yeah\, there will be almost no paved roads and due to the nature of the course\, no place to hide from the wind in a group. You will be on your own. \nThe only Euro-style Spring Classics on American soil\, this BWR in Kansas is being hosted by Sunflower Outdoor and Bike Shop.

SUMMARY:FLAT Month of Creativity - Kid Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate our trails as we keep our physical distance.\n–Write poems or stories about our favorite trails.\n–Create animals and fantastic beasts we see along our trails (or wish we saw)! \nAnyone big or small\, young or well aged can play. \nHOW TO PLAY \nChoose a trail or section of trail (like part of the Loop) and visit it. Are there particular creatures you see? If you close your eyes are there creatures you hear or smell! Does the trail have a personality\, is it peaceful or boisterous or calming or – you name it. \n1) Then make a picture or sculpture of the creature you saw or wish you would see (let your imagination soar) on that trail. You can make a sculpture out of cardboard\, papier mache\, clay\, sticks and string/vines. Whatever you have around\, no need to go buy anything! \n2) Write a poem about the trail. Haiku\, limericks or Shakespearean sonnets are some possibilities. \nThen SHARE a picture of your creature and your poem with us here or on FLAT’s Instagram. \nHere are some links for how to make papier mache\, create sculptures from cardboard and other items.\nhttps://www.thesprucecrafts.com/paper-mache-paste-recipes-1245287\nhttps://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Sculpture https://lovelygreens.com/30-garden-projects-using-sticks-twigs/ \nOnce we can start hanging out together again\, we’ll share the images and poems at events. Next year\, at the Trails That Connect Us event we’ll display your creations. \nKeep an eye on this page for future updates. \nSchedule: On your own\, when you need to get outside.
