Get Out There: Clinton North Shore Trails
There are a number of trail options on the north shore of Clinton Lake. The North Shore Trails run along the north shore of the lake from the Overlook Park through Clinton State Park. The trails pass through oak and hickory forests and follow the lake shore. Bluebirds, beaver, foxes and coyotes can been seen. Camping is only allowed in one area along the trail. Restrooms and water can be found not too far off the trails.
Hiking and Biking Trails
The single track dirt hiking or biking trail system totals 23 miles in length. The trails are marked with White, Blue or Red mile markers and trail connector trails are marked with two colors corresponding to the trails being connected. The Red trails run along the shoreline. A mountain bike skills loop is located at the west end of the trail system.

Cross-Country Ski Trail
The hiking or skiing trail is a 10-foot wide mowed grass on the north side of Clinton State Park. It includes a bridge and a rocky creek crossing as well as spectacular lake views from the crest of Bunker Hill.

Nature Trails
There are two educational nature trails at Clinton Lake. The Backwoods Nature Trail is 5/8 of a mile and the Nature’s Way Children’s Discovery Trail is a 1/2 mile. Both are located directly behind the Corps of Engineers Office. Interpretive placards point out the various plants and animals which may be seen along the trails. Though the trails are relatively short they are hilly.
Sanders Mound Trail
The Sanders Mound Trail connects to South Lawrence Trafficway trail and climbs to the top of Sanders Mound with a birds-eye view of the lake.
Note:
- If the trails are muddy, please preserve the condition by not using them until they are dry.
- Pack out whatever your pack in so the trails are as you found them.
- Watch out for other trail users. Bikers should yield to walkers and announce as you approach.
- Use only established, marked trails.
- Be courteous to wildlife. Approach quietly and slowly to avoid scaring them.
- Prepare for your outing by wearing weather appropriate clothing. Bring snacks and water. Pack bug spray and sunscreen as needed.
- Be aware of insects and animals which may be on the trail.
