Walkers on the Levee Trail

Get Out There: Lawrence Levee Trail

The Lawerence Levee Trail runs along the top of the levee on the north bank of the Kansas River. It is a packed gravel 10-mile family-friendly trail that offers views of farmland and the river as well as downtown Lawrence.

To the north from the Kansas River Bridge, the trail provides access to Riverfront Park, which features a disc golf course, an off-leash dog park and a wildlife and native grass preserve. Going southeast from the Kansas Rive Bridge the Levee Trail continues for another 5 miles along the river.

The principal parking for the Levee Trail is off of Locust Street in North Lawrence (take a right on Locust after crossing the Kansas River Bridge into north Lawrence and then another right into the parking lot), across from the street from the Union Pacific Depot. There is also parking further north available at Riverfront Park. The park’s entrance is located at the intersection of North 2nd Street, US 24 and US 40. There is also a small parking lot for the Levee Trail one mile east of the Kansas River Bridge at the south end of North 8th Street, at the entrance to the North Lawrence River Trails.

The trailhead for the Lawrence River Trail is also located at the parking lot at the parking lot at the south end of North 8th Street. The Lawrence River Trail is a rustic trail for mountain biking ant hiking. It ends at the east end of the Levee Trail to make a loop, if desired.
