Newest Lawrence Loop Construction Near Completion

The new Peterson Park to North Michigan Lawrence Loop construction is nearing completion. The tunnel under the turnpike entrance at McDonald drive is in the finishing stages.

The concrete work is complete. A fence has been installed along the path near North Michigan. The velvet weeds have been removed and grass and small evergreen trees have been planted. It appears the dirt work at the east entrance to the tunnel is nearing completion. Rock is being placed around a small drainage ditch.

The work began in February and will be completed later this month. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, date TBA, The project is 80% funded through a Federal Transportation Alternatives grant. When this new section is completed, 19 miles of the eventual 22 mile Lawrence Loop will be complete.

The Lawrence Loop is a paved 10-foot wide shared use path. The City of Lawrence began construction more than 20 years ago. The Loop accommodates residents and visitors of all ages and abilities who walk, run, bike or wheel the trail.
